HAMR - Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording

Its back!  Seagate is working on this again. Seagate has posted the job that they are looking for engineers to work on this.

Laser Hard Drives – You know you love it….

I had previously talked about a patent Seagate had submitted in 2002-2006 for a new technology called HAMR. Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording.  This is a hard drive where the material has changed for the platters and now would require a Laser to point in-front of the sector you are changing to heat it up so the head can change the state of it. The belief is that this will eliminate the problem at the current density that is known as the Superparamagnetic effect.

This could allow the size to grow by as much as 100x, however due to engineering overcompensation decisions in the past it seems that they are cautiously optimistic that it will only increase by a factor of 4x J

DeepSpar Disk Imager 3: Available NOW!

DeepSpar Disk Imager 3: Available NOW!

We’ve just released DeepSpar Disk Imager 3, and this latest version brings you many improvements. A major advantage is the ability to image specific directories and files on NTFS partitions. You can now specify what type of files and/or filename masks you want to target and the Imager only processes sectors that belong to those files while skipping all other areas.

We call this new functionality Imaging Files By MFT Mask. This file imaging method has several advantages (compared to Imaging By File Browsing implemented by other tools): it is much faster and has a lower risk of drive failure. Imaging by MFT Mask uses a drive linear imaging sequence rather than a sequence defined by the file system allocation information. As a result, the heads do not jump back and forth all the time while imaging each file, but instead go from LBA 0 to Maximum LBA and image only fragments of selected data.

This version of DeepSpar Disk Imager is more visual, interactive and configurable than any DeepSpar product to date and provides dramatically more control than the typical disk imaging tools out there. We are confident it will help you get more data for your clients, faster. Please refer to our post on the DeepSpar forum for more information about this release.

New: DeepSpar Image Explorer

We also released a new Windows-based application, DeepSpar Image Explorer, which is a counterpart to DeepSpar Disk Imager. This application works with NTFS partitions of the image drive and it can perform these tasks: browsing partitions, saving imaged files, viewing a chain of all fragments of specific files/directories in a map, editing sector hex values, and more.

Platter Extraction Tools

There looks to be another way of possibly platter removal for motor damage. This is useful for drives that have platters with spacers we have all had some problems with.  I have heard these discussions for about a year now, but this is the first idea that seems to have a possible professional tool.  The idea is to attach the tool to the top of the platters with screws and use the spindle extraction pin in the center to unclip and remove the whole spindle holding the platters in the air.  Again this thing looks rather expensive… I heard a number £6,500 – which if I did this right, will be about $10k in USD.

Someone sent me this info, don’t know if they want me to mention their name, if they do they can speak up, if not… thanks!

SERT - The First Pictures

22/01/2010

As you can see the SERT solution is made up of various parts, it provides a mechanism for the removal of platters that include spacers and a spindle extraction and replacement technique. Resulting in a tool that can recover data from drives that were previously irrecoverable!

SERT (Spindle, Extraction and Replacement Tool) has become an overnight success! Many clients have placed their order before the demonstration event in February.

The event will include two demonstrations of the SERT tool and the technique which will give you the opportunity to take a closer look at the recovery process.
